Are your car brakes low on padding? If so, it is critical that you replace them as soon as possible, as failing to do so can create further braking issues. If you have no idea whether or not your brake pads are low, it can be difficult to determine when it is time for new brakes, as there is not clear indicator on your dashboard that informs you. Well, to ensure you replace your brakes when needed, there are signs to look for, such as:

Grinding Noises:

Grinding noises can be one of the first signs that your brake pads need to be replaced. If you are unsure why, well the answer is simple. Underneath your brake pads, are metal plates, and once the pads completely wear, these metal plates will have a metal to metal connection with your brake rotors. This connection can cause the grinding noise that you hear when stepping on your brake pedal. Although your car still slows when pressing on your brake, don’t take this lightly, as failing to replace your brake pads in a timely manner can result in further damages to your braking system.

Shaking Car:

If your car shakes when braking, don’t hesitate to take your car in for brake repair services. A car that shakes when braking usually means that your brake pads have reached its metal plate and has created grooves in the brake rotors. Grooves in the brake rotors causes the rotors to warp, which prevents the brake pads from having a flat surface to latch onto when braking, which creates the shakiness that you feel. Your auto shop will be able to replace both your pads and rotors, or if you are on a budget then you can have your repair shop resurface the rotors, which can save you money and prevent further shakiness.

Pedal Resistance:

Are you stepping on your brake pedal but feel like you have to press harder than usual? If so, this can be due to having bad brake fluid, as old brake fluid can have air bubbles, which make your brake pedal feel a little soft and spongy. Your auto repair shop will be able to resolve this by flushing your old brake fluid out, and bleeding new fluid into your brake line, which will ensure new air sneaks into your fluid line. This will make your brake pedal feel more responsive to your touch, so you can brake with ease.

These are three clear indicators that it is time for new brake pads, so when experiencing one of these signs, be sure that you visit your local auto repair shop sooner, rather than later, to have your brake pads professionally replaced.
